Bengals coach Zach Taylor made a call to score the fourth goal in the second half against the Ravens and his decision was torched after the loss.
After the two-minute warning at Sunday Night Football, the Cincinnati Bengals took a 17-16 lead over the Baltimore Ravens. But staying 1:58 on the clock was more than enough time for Mar Jackson to lead the offensive on the field and get Justin Tucker into the gimme range for one of the best kicks in NFL history.
He converted the 43-yard attempt as time was up, giving the Ravens the lead and the win in the end. And while Jackson’s drive-in efforts and Tucker’s kick secured a Baltimore win, all anyone could talk about was a third-quarter end decision by Bengals coach Zack Taylor.
After a long ride in Cincinnati, he faced Joe Borough with a fourth and a goal from the 2-yard line. Instead of getting three points almost empty in a game the Bengals were behind, Taylor chose to go for it. But an ominous shovel pass from Burrow hit the ground and instead, the club turned the ball down.
Those three points given up for relegation proved very important after the final score was 19-17 in favor of the Ravens.
Bengals coach Zack Taylor outlasted his fourth-place decision against the Ravens
It wasn’t lost on the NFL fans who were watching the prime-time contest and let Zack Taylor have it after the game was over.
In the analytics boom in the NFL, the book says it should be done in this situation, so it’s hard to mistake Taylor’s decision entirely without relying heavily on hindsight.
However, it was the plays advocated by the same motive that infuriated audiences. And now that last year’s AFC Super Bowl representatives are slim 2-3 to start the season, the fact of the matter is that Zack Taylor will be under the microscope more than ever.
