How Michigan’s win over Penn State affects the Top 25

Michigan football’s big win over Penn State could give an excuse to move up the college football rankings while the Nittany Lions will have to fall back.

After looking rather mediocre the past few weeks, Michigan has had the opportunity to show voters what they’ve made against Pennsylvania.

It was shaky early on. While the Wolverines dominated the Nittany Lions on a play-by-play basis, they struggled to end drives with relegation. Penn State has managed to keep the game close thanks to some big plays, including the pick of six.

In the end, quality won. Michigan got it together and ran away with a 41-17 win.

What does that mean for college football rankings? Obviously some things still need to be played out, but the Wolverines can make a strong case to rise against a team like Clemson with a good win.

Voters may ultimately disagree with moving Michigan ahead of Clemson if the Tigers don’t lose to Florida. However, how many of them will Clemson take over Michigan on a neutral field today?

Wolverine’s hasty attack was amazing against the nation’s 5th quick defense. Penn State was only allowing 79.8 yards per game on the ground. They ceded 173 yards to Donovan Edwards and another 166 yards to Blake Corum.

As for the Nittany Lions, there’s no shame in losing to a top 5 team on the road. They will not fall away.
