After the Guardians went down an early hole in their deciding match 5 game against the Yankees, fans lost it when the team didn’t challenge a clear call.
Terry Francona couldn’t have written a worst-case scenario for the Cleveland Guardians in Tuesday afternoon’s crucial game 5 of the ALDS Series against the New York Yankees.
On the road in the Bronx, Francona hasn’t modified his plans to start Aaron Ceval after the originally scheduled Monday night final was postponed to Tuesday, although Shane Bieber hasn’t submitted since Friday. Moreover, the best weapons in the bull game were also available. That proved fateful after two runners were put on the field and walking before Giancarlo Stanton tattooed a baseball over the right field court fence.
Each team added a run after that, leaving the Guardians on a 4-1 hole. And at the top of the fourth inning with two naysayers, Andres Jimenez created a tricky game with a volley for the first, but Anthony Rizzo flagged the bag and took the call from the referee.
The only problem: Gimenez didn’t come out because he beat the mark because the Rizzo’s dive was short. But to make matters even worse, the Cleveland – the team that had challenged two clearly valid calls earlier in the series – decided not to challenge the play that would have given them a super valuable base runner.
Guardians fans are furious after not challenging Andres Jimenez’s bad call
Needless to say, Guardians fans were less excited and voiced this on social media while others were quick to trol the club.
This is just a shocking act at that moment for the Guardians. It’s one thing if the call is close, but the replay blatantly shows that it wasn’t. Even closer than that, the team would have lost three rounds in the win game or go home — that’s the exact time to break the challenge in order to get someone to base.
Between Civale’s decision and then this (among other things), the Francona and the Guardians will have a lot of tension to face this match.
