The Cleveland Guardians are among the youngest teams in baseball, making them more dependent on their veteran manager, Terry Francona. He let them down on Tuesday night.
Tito is one of the best coaches in baseball at his best. Getting the Revolutionary Guards to this far – on the edge of the ALCS position – is an achievement in itself. Cleveland has a bright future, and Francona You should play a major role in that.
However, he is not immune to criticism. In Game 5 alone, Francona made some baffling decisions that had dire consequences for the Cleveland baseball team that could afford no mistakes.
Francona will certainly have explanations for his decisions, most of which will give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s got that right. But if the Guardians manager chooses a less crowded route, Cleveland may be headed to Houston on Wednesday, rather than the Yankees.
Terry Francona’s Mistakes: Run Around the Big Bat
Francona made many mistakes with his crew in the fifth game, but we’ll start with the obvious.
Aaron Judge hasn’t played well this series, but the last few matches he’s started are heating up. In Game 5, the judge went 2-for-4 off the board, which included a solo race at home. Meanwhile, Giancarlo Stanton opened the scoring with Homer’s three-run side Aaron Ceval.
New York lives and dies by the long ball. While it’s tough to get around both Judge and Stanton, for them to be successful, one or both of them have to be big. On Tuesday, they both killed The Guardians.
That points to a lack of strategy or communication from the Cleveland coaching staff, and arguably some shoddy scouts to boot.
