Georgia taunted by referees with awful non-safety call against Tennessee (VIDEO)

Georgia State apparently had Tennessee in the end zone for safety, but Dawgs was completely isolated by a terrible call and review from the governors.

After Stetson Bennett IV gave the Georgia Bulldogs an early 7-3 lead over the #1 ranked Tennessee Volunteers, a nice bet pinned Hendon Hooker and Co. On the 1 yard line and the offense couldn’t go any further.

That’s when disaster struck apparently for folders. Hooker slipped back to pass his end zone and was under immediate pressure from the crowded Dogs defense. The ball was stripped before it could be thrown and retrieved by an attacking lineman who tried to take it out of the end zone to avoid safety.

Officials initially decided that the ball was making its way out of the end zone after the line operator fumbled and was recovered on the half-yard line. But when we saw the video, it looked like he’s down in the end zone, which should have been safe.

But when the umpires went to review it, they somehow ruled that the call in the field stood, which means Tennessee has a chance to bet.

Georgian football spoiled by explosive safety plea, Stetson Bennett IV offsets

I’m not quite sure what the judges were looking at in that review. The line player obviously falls into the end zone with the ball not crossing the goal line.

The CBS broadcast was discussing the review and said the two most likely outcomes were that they judged it as a safety or even that they judged Hooker’s arm was moving forward and was an incomplete pass. But instead, they came out with an invitation from either of them, which is absolutely terrible.

Fortunately for Dawgs, the ball didn’t lie and Ladd McConkey hit for a 37-yard touchdown on the first play after the throw.

Even then, it doesn’t change the fact that the umpires totally screwed up the safety call that would have made the start of the Dominant Nationals even more dominant.
