Adam Silver Interferes With Kyrie Irving With The Nets Star’s Future Under Investigation

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has met Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving as a step toward reconciliation after he was suspended over a tweet about an antisemitic movie.

After giving Kyrie Irving several days to properly apologize for a tweet about an anti-Semitic movie, the Brooklyn Nets suspended the star guard on November 3 for five games without pay.

Meanwhile, as the team parted with coach Steve Nash, Irving’s (albeit limited) comment raised questions not only about his long-term prospects with the Brooklyn Nets, but also his long-term prospects of playing in the NBA.

Amid the scandal, Kyrie Irving received a warning not only from the team but also from the league and the NBPA. Commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement In response, once it became clear that Irving would not issue an unequivocal apology.

Kyrie Irving made the rash decision to post a link to a movie that contained highly offensive anti-Semitic material. . . . I’ll meet with Kyrie in person next week to discuss this situation.

In a first step back to the court, Irving met Silver. Early reports after the meeting indicated that the conversation was fruitful, and opened the door for Brooklyn to bring back Keri Irving.

But just meeting with Silver alone wasn’t enough to get the star back on the court. As part of the suspension, the team informed Irving that he needed to complete six action items before returning to play, giving the Nets time to reevaluate his return.

As he progressed to completing some of the items on the list, Nets GM Sean Marks stated that it was up to Keri Irving to take the process seriously and show actual remorse. An apology alone will not be enough.

So far, Irving has missed three matches. While he has taken some steps to get back into play, the team will ultimately determine the timeline for his comeback.
