Los Angeles Dodgers star Trea Turner is officially a free agent, and appears likely to land with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Los Angeles Dodgers star Trea Turner is a hot target in the free agency market for 2023. Several teams are rightly looking forward to the talented short stopping point, but of course, only one team can land it. Although he offered no hint as to where he might end up, the St. Louis Cardinals seem to be among the most likely contenders.
John Heyman from New York Post He compiled a list of the Top 30 Free Agents for 2023, ranking Turner at number four and writing, “Some think he’d rather go east, but he said he loves LA and will look at everything. People love him. Teams: Dodgers, Phillies, Cardinals, Red Sox , Cubs, Braves. Expert: $275 million, 9 years.”
All of the teams listed would make sense, because they all have a hard time on their short hiatus, whether they’re others entering a free agency or simply not having enough consistency in the situation.
However, ESPN’s Jeff Bassan shared a clip of Turner narrated by St. Louis native actor Jon Hamm, which could be a subtle hint as to where he’s heading.
Hamm is a well-known Cardinals fan. He’s appeared in matches at other ballparks wearing the Cardinals hat, and he is Narrated by the 2011 World Cardinals Championship Documentary. Of course, Hamm doesn’t have the last word on where Turner ends up, but the St. Louis tie seems very serendipitous given that the cards are tied to him.
The Cardinals have also lost several veteran stars this season, which is why they need more.
The Cardinals need stars to replace those who retired this season
St. Louis lost veterans Albert Pujols and runs Molina and Adam Wainwright at the end of the 2022 season. It was an emotional time for fans, but it wasn’t shocking as everyone moved closer and closer to retirement. With all three gone, the cards could stand to sign another superstar like Turner to create a new legacy on the team.
Turner would be an ideal candidate. He’s a two-time All-Star and has a career average of .302/.255/.487 in an OPS of .842. It was one of the best short stops in 2022 with the second best hitting average (.298) among all short stops in the league and the third best on base (.343), slowdown percentage (.466) and WAR (6.3 )
They can also use the improvements in Shortstop in general, and with the three stars gone, they have plenty of payroll so they can offer Turner a tempting sum. The team is on the rise, and they could benefit greatly from signing Turner. Given the links with St. Louis, it doesn’t seem out of the question.
