Virginia Football cancels a game against Coastal Carolina after a shooting left 3 players dead

Virginia Football has announced that the November 19 game against Coastal Carolina has been canceled following the deaths of three players in a campus shooting.

The University of Virginia football team was mourning the deaths of three teammates – D’Sean Perry, Lavel Davis Jr. and Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler—and two other students, including an extra player, were injured in a campus shooting carried out by another student and former member of the football team.

In the aftermath of tragedy, football has always seemed secondary. Three young men lost their lives to senseless violence, which rocked not only the UVA football team but the university, the student body, and the city of Charlottesville.

However, the Cavaliers were scheduled to play Saturday, November 19, against Coastal Carolina and head coach Tony Elliott could not say if that contest would take place. On Wednesday morning, the university announced its cancellation of the match.

The Virginia Athletics also canceled its basketball game on Monday, the day after the night after the tragic shooting, prior to this decision on the football game.

The Cavaliers also still have one game left, a rivalry game against Virginia Tech, on Saturday, November 26th. It is currently still undetermined whether or not the Virginia football team will play this game making a decision to, in essence, cancel the remainder of the season.

Elliott held a press conference Tuesday night, the show’s first since the deaths of Perry, Davis, and Chandler. It was very moving as the first year coach shared his memories of the youngsters and players who lost their lives Sunday night.

Whatever the Virginia football program decides about Virginia Tech will be completely understandable. It is incomprehensible the sadness and grief felt by this team in the wake of this tragedy, and it truly goes beyond the sport of football that we love.
