Carlos Correa just finished the 2022 season with the Minnesota Twins, and there are rumors that they want to keep him around a little longer. According to John Heyman of the New York Post, the twins “Definitely motivated to keep Korea.”
As one of the best shortstops in the league, it’s obvious why Minnesota would want to keep him. The Twins, unfortunately, have a lot of development to focus on because they’ve missed playoff games two straight seasons and barely make it far in the playoffs when they do.
Minnesota has reached the Championship Series only once in the 2000s, and barely made it to the playoffs at all in the 2010s. They haven’t attended a World Series since 1991, but they’re not necessarily in a competitive division.
Their team clearly needs a little work, and Correa is sure to keep things moving in the right direction.
However, it looks like he will be a difficult signing given that Correa has opted out of his contract.
The Twins probably won’t have an easy path to maintaining Carlos Correa’s presence
Correa is going to be a huge value in the market, and several teams are after it. As a veteran player with a lot of talent, he probably wants to increase his chances of winning the championship while making a lot of money.
This free agency allows him to receive offers potentially earning more than what the Twins paid him, which was already a huge amount, about $35.1 million a season for three seasons. There is a possibility that he will return to Minnesota with the appropriate amount, but his asking price will be through the roof.
However, the twins were reportedly willing to make such an offer. SkorNorth’s Darren Wolfson stated: Macy’s Podcast“They’re going to put on a pretty amazing show for him. In fact, this week I’m told they’re pushing for a lockout sooner rather than later. They’re going to put on the richest show in team history.”
They’re also reportedly following Xander Bogaerts and Dansby Swanson, so they’re aiming to sign the Correa-caliber shortstop no matter what. However, Correa has proven to do well in Minnesota during the 2022 season, so they seem more interested in keeping him.
