What does USC need to make the college football game?

Here’s how the USC Trojans could make the College Football Playoff after being listed as the No. 6 team in the most recent rankings.

The Trojans are thriving at USC in their first year under head coach Lincoln Riley. Last week, they were ranked as the No. 7 team in the country by the College Football Playoff selection committee. They responded by defeating the UCLA Bruins in a nail-biting game behind great performances from quarterback and Heisman favorite Caleb Williams. Their odds were hypothetically boosted after the Tennessee Volunteers were crushed by the South Carolina Gamecocks.

On Tuesday night, USC climbed to sixth in the nation in the latest college football rankings. They are behind the top four Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, California State University and LSU Tigers, who are ranked No. 5.

Don’t worry, Trojans fans, the team has a path to the College Football Playoff. Here’s how that could become a reality.

How USC can make the College Football Playoff after the latest rankings

To start, the Trojans would have to win their remaining games to stand a chance. They will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday, the same team that gave the Clemson Tigers their first loss of the season. Next, they play either Oregon, Utah or Washington in the Pac-12 game.

If they had two wins, it would be hard for the committee to let the Pac-12 champ leave one loser out of the playoffs. But they’ll need something else to really help their odds, and that’s a loss to the LSU Tigers.

LSU had two losses on the year, but had huge wins over Ole Miss and Alabama. Ironically, Alabama then helped them clinch the SEC West with a win over Ole Miss and a shot at the SEC title. For USC, they need to root for Georgia to beat LSU in the SEC Championship Game.

If USC beats Notre Dame, wins the Pac-12 title, and gets help from Georgia, it can realistically make the College Football Playoff.
