Qatar is the first team to be eliminated from the 2022 World Cup and the first host country to be eliminated from the group stage since 2010.
The first country in the Middle East to host the World Cup in more than 90 years, Qatar were not the favorites to advance from the group stage, but there was hope among fans that they would put up a fight.
Instead, the hosts are the first team eliminated from the competition.
After opening the tournament with a 2-0 defeat against Ecuador, Qatar’s second match against Senegal put them without their best player, Sadio Mane, due to injury. It didn’t matter, however, as Senegal put three home to seal a 3-1 victory. Then, with the Netherlands and Ecuador tied in the next match, Qatar was mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the knockout stage.

With this elimination, Qatar became the first host country not to be eliminated in the group stage since South Africa in 2010. Prior to that, Spain in 1982 was in the second group stage of the previous format because the host country did not qualify. to the knockout stage.
Having said that, the host countries’ success in the World Cup has been relative over the years. No host country has been champions since France in 1998 and Argentina in 1978 were the last to achieve the feat before that.
Sadly, Qatar has now made it at least four more years before we see the host nation have a chance of becoming champions with their exit, although they will have another match against the Netherlands on November 29.
