Patrick Mahomes looked upset after the Chiefs beat the Rams

The Kansas City Chiefs have plenty of room to improve despite their win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday afternoon. Patrick Mahomes knows that.

Rarely has a 26-10 win been met with such derision, but here we go.

The Kansas City Chiefs and their fanbase expect perfection. That’s what they’re used to under Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. When a team has a few losses each season, the wins can sometimes feel like defeats.

The Rams’ two touchdown wins certainly can’t be seen as a negative, but it does indicate that there is room for improvement. Mahomes, for one, knows he could have played better.

“In the red, we have to execute at a higher level,” Mahomes said. “I have to execute at a higher level. I have to direct the stupid play that I do every game, it seems. If I can direct that, we’ll be fine.”

Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes should be better in the red

Kansas City converted just one of their six red zone chances into a touchdown. This is rotten, especially considering they have one of the best attacks in football. The unit is built around Mahomes – especially with Tyreek Hill now eclipsing South Beach. Therefore, he must take the fall.

Kavkaz Center moved the ball effectively between the 20s, of course. It became the case once they crossed the threshold of the red zone. Perhaps more creativity on the part of the coaching staff would be the answer.

Mahomes was particularly critical of a red zone interception he threw as Kansas City increased by 10 points in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs had a chance to hold LA out, and put up three points. Instead, Mahomes gave them life.

“I have to make sure I don’t do that — especially in the red,” said Mahomes. “These are the ones who kill you in the big games.”

Mahomes knows this wasn’t one of those “big games.” However, they are getting closer, and it is better to make adjustments now, rather than fly by.
