With Jacob deGrom not signing, and uncertainty in other areas of the rotation, the New York Mets are weighing all their options, as is Carlos Rodon.
The Mets remain interested in re-signing deGrom. Team officials recently met right-hander Justin Verlander and now left-hander Carlos Rodon, as first reported by Joel Sherman from the New York Post.
Rodon, 30 in December, has been dominant the past two seasons. He posted a 2.37 ERA and 34.6 strikeout percentage with the Chicago White Sox in 2021, though his previous injury history limited his market to a short-term contract with the San Francisco Giants that allowed him to withdraw after his senior season. In his first season in San Francisco, he posted a 2.88 ERA and a 33.4 strikeout percentage in 178 innings pitched, placing himself firmly in the conversation as one of baseball’s elite pitchers.

The Mets’ starting Ramby interest in the free agent wasn’t surprising. In addition to deGrom, Taijuan Walker and Chris Bassett are both free agents, meaning Max Scherzer and Carlos Carrasco are the only pitchers from last season’s rotation under contract. Which explains their reported interest in other free client startups like Jameson Taillon, Kodai Senga, and Andrew Heaney.

But their interest in other elite pitchers doesn’t mean DeGrum will leave. far from it. DeGrom loves New York and the Mets as much as he does and the two sides have kept in touch throughout free agency. But the organization has talked to Rodon and Verlander so that 1) they have as much information as possible at their disposal and 2) are willing to act accordingly should deGrom do. In a perfect world, the Mets would pair an elite starter with Scherzer. Maybe this is deGrom. Perhaps this is Verlander or Rodon. Either way, the cost will be significant; DeGrom and Verlander are expected to sign deals close to Scherzer’s three-year, $130 million contract while MLB Trade Rumors Rodon expects to sign a five-year, $140 million contract.
The Mets will add one, possibly two starting pitchers this offseason. It remains to be seen if they add an elite starting pitcher, but team officials meeting both Verlander and Rodon while maintaining interest in DeGrom suggest they are seriously exploring him.
