Rose Bowl Cuddling to Expand College Football Play: What That Means

The Rose Bowl finally agreed to amend its contract to allow for an expansion of the College Football Playoff by the 2024 season.

Back in September, the College Football Playoff announced plans to expand its format from four teams to 12 starting with the 2026 season. This is due in part to the time they have left on their contracts with ESPN, which expire after the 2025 season. 2024, but the Rose Bowl was the only dissenting vote, threatening to sink the entire plan.

But according to ESPN, the Rose Bowl has agreed to amend his contract to help accelerate expansion of the College Football Playoff by 2024.

The main reason the Rose Bowl will not join the Sugar, Peach, Fiesta, Cotton and Orange bowls in the agreement is because they want assurances that they will be able to They held their regular game times for future playoffs, 2026 and beyond. This proposal was rejected by the board of directors, since they do not have a specific contract beyond the 2025 season.

For those unaware, the Rose Bowl takes place every New Year’s Day at 5:00 PM ET.

By holding on, the pot would have cost CFP about $450 million in additional revenue.

According to ESPN’s Heather DinichHowever, the Rose Bowl was “basically given an ultimatum this week” to agree to the terms in the plan, or it could risk being suspended from its next television contract in 2026.

Here’s how the expanded 12-team match format works:

  • The sixth highest hero gets an automatic berth
  • The remaining six spots will be awarded to the six highest ranked teams
  • The top four conference champions will receive a bye to the first round
  • The first round matches will be played at the home stadium of the best seed.
  • The quarterfinal and semifinal games will be an alternation of the six bowl games (Rose, Orange, Peach, Sugar, Cotton, and Fiesta).

With the Rose Bowl finally on board, CFP’s expansion is now headed towards starting in 2024. Now, we await an official announcement from CFP.
