The Phillies signed the superstar shortstop to a massive deal

The Philadelphia Phillies signed star shortstop Tria Turner to a huge contract, adding to his pennant-winning team from a year ago.

Trea Turner was the best shortstop available on the open market, and the Phillies had a clear gap in that department. Philadelphia general manager Dave Dombrowski has always been obligated to sign one of four primary free agent shortstops, and the question has always been which.

Turner, who’s the star from this group, has been linked to Philadelphia for some time. His wife grew up just over 50 miles from the city of brotherly love in Flemington, New Jersey.

Tria Turner contract details

Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, will be covered by Trea Turner’s contract through his 40-year-old season. Turner, who hit .298/.343/.466 last season with 21 home runs, will immediately slip into a lineup that already includes his former teammate, Bryce Harper (when healthy), Kyle Schwarber, Reese Hoskins and more. It was the strength of the Phils that catapulted them to near world championship glory. Perhaps with Turner available, they’ll have similar success.

What the Trea Turner deal means for the Phillies, NL East

Despite winning the National League last season, the Phillies finished third in the NL East, with the Mets and Braves finishing the year ahead of them. Suddenly, Philadelphia’s chances look a lot better, especially if Bryce Harper returns healthy by the middle of the season.

Turner’s contract resets the market for the three remaining free agent stops – Xander Bogaerts, Carlos Correa and Dansby Swanson – all of whom are looking for their own record-breaking deals. By breaking the $300 million mark, Bogaerts, Correa, and Swanson should know exactly where they stand.

Expect the deals to start pouring in now, especially after both Turner and Justin Verlander signed deals in the NL East. Can the brave respond?
