Lincoln Riley’s message to Baker Mayfield after the Rams’ first appearance

Lincoln Riley praising Baker Mayfield’s performance on Thursday Night Football must have made Oklahoma fans throwing batteries crazy, okay.

At one point, Lincoln Riley and Baker Mayfield did unusual things together in Oklahoma.

Mayfield was Riley’s first star quarterback at OU. They worked together at Norman for three years. The first two were when Riley was the offensive coordinator for Bob Stoops. When Stoops retired and Riley took over the Oklahoma program, Mayfield led the Sooners to the College Football Playoff, winning the 2017 Heisman Trophy in the process. A lot has changed for these former Sooners.

Riley left for USC this off-season. Oklahoma fans hated every second of his unimaginable departure. As for Mayfield, he finished first overall for the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft. After four seasons up and down in Northeast Ohio, he was traded to the Carolina Panthers earlier this week before being released earlier this week. He made his Los Angeles Rams debut on Thursday night.

Riley is blessed with one of the greatest victories of his football career, as he congratulates his new ‘neighbor’ on his first win as Angelino’s teammate. Oklahoma fans are absolutely in shambles because of this.

Lincoln Riley Baker Mayfield welcomes Los Angeles, Oklahoma fans are furious

Admittedly, Mayfield’s run in Los Angeles is only temporary. The Rams are having a season from hell after winning the Super Bowl. Star quarterback in Matthew Stafford was placed on injured reserve. Even if the Rams come back to life down the stretch, Los Angeles is a very long shot at making the postseason. At the very least, Mayfield proves to everyone that he can still play.

Although Mayfield will never be trained by Riley again, the fact that they thrive in the same capital city is a bit shocking to say the least. Riley returned to USC, while Mayfield was hanging on for dear life as an NFL quarterback at the starting level. The Las Vegas Raiders aren’t some of the best in the world, but winning means winning, especially with a new team in such a short week.

In the end, Sooners fans will get over the successes of the former players and coaches once Brent Venables turns on Norman. He may have had first-year OU bowling, but the Sooners went 6-6 in his first season at the helm. Not to say Oklahoma will fire him after two years, but Venables has inherited one of the best positions in the Power Five. You must get better.

Mayfield and Riley show the Oklahoman that good things happen when you go to Los Angeles.
