The Yankees could steal Carlos Correa from the Giants after Aaron Judge

After re-signing Aaron Judge to a nine-year, $360 million deal, the Yankees aren’t done stealing nice things from the Giants. Could Carlos Correa be next?

Recent reports indicate that Carlos Correa has yet to receive an offer of $300 million. Tria Turner, who was the best shortstop in the open market, signed that much with the Phillies. Xander Bogaerts, perhaps a level below Correa’s valuation, signed for $280 million. So why not cut the deficit in half?

When they missed out on Aaron Judge, the San Francisco Giants were initially seen as the favorites to touch down Korea. After all, they have a hole in the shortstop and would like to add a marquee star this off-season.

However, San Francisco left the Winter Meetings without this coveted player. Could the Yankees lurk again? ESPN’s Buster Olney He thinks it is a possibility.

Will the Yankees try to sign Carlos Correa?

Is this a replay of the 2021 MLB offseason?

The Yankees were among the many teams to field Carlos Correa just a year earlier, but they weren’t ready to match the star shortstop’s terms, instead choosing to side with two intriguing ones, Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza. Correa would go on to sign a short-term AAV contract with the Minnesota Twins.

Now that Correa is once again a free agent, the Americans have an opportunity to right old wrongs. As talented as Volpe and Peraza are, there is no guarantee they will reach the pinnacle of a player like Correa.

If they sign Correa, it also opens up the possibility of trading one of those higher-ranked prospects to tackle other needy situations, like the pitch (see: Reynolds, Brian).

However, the most likely outcome is that the Yanks sit idly by with their young shortstop, but sign a top-tier cornerback and starter. The addition of Andrew Benintendi and Carlos Rodon, for example, keeps Hal Steinbrenner within his budget, and improves on the established competitor.
