Caleb Williams buys private hype with comparisons to Patrick Mahomes

Some have compared USC quarterback Caleb Williams to Patrick Mahomes and potential Heisman winner buying hype on those lofty comps.

There isn’t a Sunday that goes by that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes doesn’t wow the fans with some ridiculous feat. Whether it’s his insane talent with his arm, his creativity, or his mobility, he’s electric every time he has the ball in his hands. And that’s the same sentiment that USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams gave People.

In his first season with the Trojans after following head coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma to USC, Williams led his team to a Pac-12 Championship game berth and almost to the college football field. And on Saturday night, he’s expected to lift the Heisman Trophy.

But what do you think of people comparing him and his ability to Mahomes, arguably the NFL’s best and most talented player? He’s not hiding from the hype train, and in fact, he seems to be buying it.

Caleb Williams on the Patrick Mahomes comparison: ‘I don’t think there’s anything I can’t do that he does’

Speaking with CBS Sports Radio’s Zack Gelb (h/t ProFootballTalk), Williams seemed to agree with the comparisons.

“It’s great, I would say, just because everybody watches Patrick and sees all the cool things he can do,” said Williams. “I always said even in high school that I don’t think there’s anything — obviously special, but I don’t think there’s anything I can’t do that he’s doing there.”

This certainly sounds like the quarterback Mahomes sees himself in as well.

For NFL teams wanting to have the Next Mahomes on their roster, though, they’ll have to wait. Williams’ first year with the Trojans was only his true sophomore campaign and he still has one year left before he becomes eligible for NFL draft, the 2024 draft to be exact.

As for the comparisons themselves, it’s easy to see where they come from. Williams has the same rare combination of traits that Mahomes does, perhaps with a bit more natural athleticism, which is truly intimidating. But to live up to what Mahomes has already accomplished in his NFL career, Williams will have to prove it and not just believe the hype about himself.
