Sunday’s World Cup final at Lucial Stadium outside Doha in Qatar will be a heavyweight showdown between defending champions France and pre-tournament favorites Argentina.
Both teams are loaded with talent (you have to be to get to such a big game), but some stand out more than others. Surely, everyone knows that this match will pit PSG teammates Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe against each other.
Messi and Mbappe are not the only important players in this game. They are certainly important, but only two of the five players to watch out for.
Players to watch in the World Cup final between France and Argentina: Lionel Messi (Argentina)
The 35-year-old Messi is, for many, the greatest of all time. For others, he needed to win the World Cup to be the goat. The final will be his last chance to step out from under the shadow of legend Diego Maradona (the last player to take Argentina to a World Cup back in 1986) and finally win the title that has eluded him for so long.
Players to watch in the World Cup final between France and Argentina: Kylian Mbappe (France)
Mbappe, who is only 23 years old, can win his second World Cup. If he does, this match could be a torch-pass of sorts from Messi to Mbappe as the best footballer on the planet. Like Messi, Mbappe has five goals in this tournament. Not only is the trophy at stake, but also the Golden Boot, which is awarded to the top scorers of the World Cup.
Players to watch in the World Cup final between France and Argentina: Julian Alvarez (Argentina)
The Argentine attack was supposed to include Messi, Angel Di Maria and Lautaro Martinez. Instead, Martinez got off to a poor start and manager Lionel Scaloni replaced him with Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez. The 22-year-old emerging star scored four goals in this tournament and became a focal point in the team’s attack. Look for Alvarez’s tally, which is likely to go up in the final.
Players to watch in the World Cup final between France and Argentina: Olivier Giroud (France)
The French striker has scored goals in this tournament after not scoring any in the French league title in 2018. Like Alvarez, he has four goals in the current World Cup finals. In the process, he overtook former France star Thierry Henry as France’s all-time leading goalscorer. He can also compete for the Golden Boot and will certainly give the Argentine defense fit for all matches.
Ones to watch in the World Cup final between France and Argentina: Karim Benzema (France)
From? The French striker, who injured himself before the World Cup, did not play a single minute in Qatar. France coach Didier Deschamps left him out of the team, but did not replace him in the official roster. This means that he can play if Deschamps decides to dress him up. Benzema isn’t supposed to be in Sunday’s game, but you never know if he’ll come on, either on the bench or in the stands, anyway.
