Jacoby Myers explains the sideline decision in the Patriots’ disastrous final play against the Raiders

New England Patriots wide receiver Jacoby Myers explained his ill-fated lateral decision against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 15.

Week 15 of the 2022 NFL season has been a furious one. On Saturday, the Minnesota Vikings pulled off the biggest comeback in NFL history by defeating the Indianapolis Colts 39-36 in overtime after trailing 33-0 at halftime. Then on Sunday, the New England Patriots lost in the most unimaginable way ever.

With the game tied 24-24 with only a few seconds remaining on the game clock, Patriots running back Rhamundry Stephenson tied the game up the middle and gained a significant amount of yardage. Seeing his path blocked, Stevenson passed the football to wide receiver Jacoby Myers, who ran back and tried to throw a pass to quarterback Mack Jones. Instead, the football went to Chandler Jones, who powerfully armed a Patriots quarterback and ran into the end zone for a touchdown of the game.

After the game, Myers spoke to the media from his locker, where he revealed that the play was supposed to be a tie play and that the decision to throw the lateral pass was his.

“I’m just trying to do a lot. I’m trying to be a hero, I guess,” Myers said, h/t Daniels. “I never see a dude over there again, I tried to throw the ball. I just was doing too much. I should have fallen with the ball.”

Stevenson also spoke about the play in question, saying the play was just to wind up the clock and admitting he should have just gotten off. Stevenson’s comments come courtesy of NBC Sports Boston.

“The play started with me with the ball, so if I don’t get it back to him, I don’t have a chance to do it,” Stephenson said. “I take full responsibility for the play. I just have to know the situation, I have to know what happens in the game.”

In the game, Myers caught two of six targets for 47 yards. Meanwhile, Stephenson ran for 172 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries (9.1 yards per carry).

It was a tough way to lose the Patriots, as they are now out of the Wild Card spot after their loss and Los Angeles Chargers win over the Tennessee Titans.

Myers was responsible for his decision, standing by his locker to answer questions from the media afterward. He tried to put on a play, but it didn’t work out.
