The New England Patriots suffered a humiliating last-second defeat at the hands of the Las Vegas Raiders, and the radio team was fed up.
A Jakobi Meyers sideline at the last second — when the Patriots were tied for the Raiders, mind you — quickly turned into a debilitating error. Lateral Said did not reach his intended receivers, as Chandler Jones played the ball and scored a defensive touchdown.
Ramondry Stephenson took the handoff and ran about 30 yards downfield, hit or miss. He then sent the ball to Myers, who ran a few yards back and threw the ball across the field. This attempt, for obvious reasons, failed, and it was eliminated by Jones. In his career, Jones had a free kick down the middle, which he didn’t miss.
Poor Mac Jones, he didn’t ask for any of this. Nor did Patriots fans, especially those who tuned in to the radio and had to hear the disgruntled broadcast team take all this on the spot.
Yikes.
The Patriots broadcast team did not back down after losing to the Raiders
Bob Sochi and Scott Zolak make up the Radio New England team 98.5 axle. It’s hard to blame either of them for reacting in such a harsh manner right now, because Myers’ decision (and Stevenson’s choice to throw the ball in the first place) was unwise.
Myers explained his pick after the game, stating that he thought he saw quarterback Mack Jones open before throwing the ball across the field into a dangerous area.
Myers also admitted that he did not see Chandler Jones, who eventually scored the game-winning goal and sent Mack onto the field at the same time with a stiff arm.
Overall, this would be one of the biggest regular season blunders in football history. And no, we’re not being dramatic.
