The Red Sox missed out on another option in free agency

The Boston Red Sox are looking to add more tackles to their roster, but they’ve missed out on a key free agent.

The Boston Red Sox failed to retain Xander Bogaerts on several occasions throughout the year. This allowed him to strike free agency, and he received a lucrative 11-year, $280 million contract with the San Diego Padres. However, they have a void on the playing field.

Boston reportedly explored the option of a free agent, but lost out.

According to Sam Bloom and Ken Rosenthal from The Athletic (subscription required), the Red Sox were “in the mix” for Brandon Drury, along with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami Marlins. Drury ended up signing a two-year, $17 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels.

In the article linked above, it was reported that one of the Red Sox, Diamondbacks, or Marlins offered Drury more money with a one-year opt-out. But, Drury chose to join the Angels.

Drury began the 2021 season with the Cincinnati Reds, posting a . 274 batting average, 0.855 OPS, 20 home runs, 59 RBI, and 96 hits over 92 games. He was then traded to the San Diego Padres, where he slew .238/.290/.435 while hitting eight home runs, 28 RBI, and 40 hits. With those numbers, Drury won the Silver Slugger Award for the first time this year.

The Red Sox are reportedly looking at in-and-out options at shortstop, as they want to keep Trevor Story at second base, According to Chad Jennings of The Athletic. One outside option the Red Sox have teased is Miami Marlins outfielder Joey Wendell.

Boston’s fan base isn’t entirely happy with the job the team has done this season, especially after losing another local talent to the Bogarts. They were in the market for Brandon Drury, but they just lost out.
