UNC, Arkansas falls, Michigan rises

This week’s women’s college basketball rankings featured a lot of action. Two teams dropped seven spots in the AP Poll, while one team moved up five.

South Carolina remained the consensus No. 1 ranking for the 27th consecutive week, the fifth-longest streak in poll history. The Gamecocks surpassed Texas’ 26-week stretch to capture the fifth spot.

The top five remained unchanged for the fourth consecutive week, with Stanford, Ohio State, Indiana, and Notre Dame occupying the positions from No. 2 to No. 5.

The back half of the top 10 does not contain any new teams, but each team moved up one place. LSU moved to nine, its highest rating for the season. The Tigers enter the conference undefeated for the first time in 20 years.

UNC dropped seven spots to No. 13 after losing to Michigan in the Jumpman Invitational. The win moved the Wolverines up five spots to No. 14. Michigan’s rise held Iowa State, Maryland, and Oregon down to one point each.

Gonzaga and Oklahoma each moved up three points to 19th and 20th, respectively. Gonzaga finished out-of-conference play with two wins, going 12-2 on the year. The Sooners pulled off a solid win against Florida in the Jumpman Invitational.

Arkansas is down seven places, to 24, after losing both games this week. The Razorbacks lost to Oregon and South Florida in the San Diego call After starting the season undefeated. They tip off conference play Thursday against LSU.

Notable women’s basketball games this week

UConn travels west to Creighton in battle with opponents from the Big East. Aaliyah Edwards has put together a handful of solid performances in recent matches and will be a handful for the Bluejays. Morgan Maley and Lauren Jensen will lead the Creighton team in search of the upset.

Duke @ #6 NC State, Thursday, December 29, 8pm EST – ESPN/ACCN

Duke makes the short trip for its first major ACC test. Kara Lawson’s team will have a chance to prove they’re a contender in the conference against the ACC champions. The Blue Devils are on a six-game winning streak, and NC State is coming on a seven-game winning streak.

#9 LSU @ #24 Arkansas, Thursday, December 29, 7pm EST – ESPN2

Arkansas has a chance to get back to their winning ways against LSU as both teams open up conference play. Angel Reese looks forward to leading LSU through the conference next Being named the SEC Player of the Week Last week for the third time this season. Arkansas garrison Samara Spencer aims to get her team back on track after two straight defeats last week.
