Pete Goulding spoiled the holiday season for Alabama fans

Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Goulding has said he expects to stay in Tuscaloosa next year, and it’s not music to the ears of many Crimson Tide fans.

Alabama’s defense allowed just 18 points per game in 2022, but after watching the Crimson Tide concede 52 points to Tennessee and 32 points to LSU in the loss, fans have seen enough of defensive coordinator Pete Golding.

“Fire Pete Golding” became a regular pronunciation on message boards and at Bryant Denny Stadium all year long. Those three words may have to hold out in 2023, along with DC.

When asked about his future with the Crimson Tide, Golding told reporters he had no plans to leave Alabama. He’s under contract, so he expects to come back.

For many Alabama fans, this is bad news.

Sorry fans, Pete Goulding plans to stay at Alabama in 2023

Of course, it’s not Golding’s decision whether to stay at Alabama. If Nick Saban wants him gone, he’ll go.

However, Saban doesn’t appear to be looking to make a defensive coordinator change if he can help it.

Fans can’t even pin their hopes on a promotion that takes Golding away from Tuscaloosa.

“I’m in no rush to be a head coach,” Golding said too.

Why is Golding so unpopular? DC came to the Tide in 2018 after years of growing fans accustomed to defenses that were virtually impossible to crack. While his defenses delivered decent stats for the season, their performance in losses was miserable.

Alabama has lost seven games since Goulding took over. Each of those defensemen gave up 30 or more points. Two of those losses were in two national title games against Clemson and Georgia. Five of the seven saw the opponent score more than 40 points.
