The fan angle of Ohio State’s missed field goal in the Peach Bowl is absolutely heartbreaking for Buckeyes fans.
It wasn’t a great start to 2023 for Ohio State Buckeyes fans.
If the count is off before midnight, the Buckeyes are in the National Championship game against TCU and on their way to an improbable title shot. But as the clock struck 12:00 and the calendar rolled into New Year’s, the world exploded around Ohio.
It’s a missed kick that’s heard around the world, and a play that will be etched in the history and lore of college football forever. Not only because of the repercussions of what the missed field goal was, but because of the context in which it occurred.
Quite literally, when the ball was down on New Year’s Eve on the East Coast, the Buckeyes missed a shot at the title.
To be fair, the Buckeyes had already put themselves in trouble after taking a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter and allowing Georgia to walk down the field for a go-ahead with less than a minute left. So, it’s a fairy tale that the Buckeyes were winners before the clock struck midnight. But the fact remains that Ohio State has managed to lose the same semifinal game in the College Football Playoff in two different years.
The sight on TV was tough enough for Buckeyes fans, but the sight of fans from the Ohio State Division inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium was pretty heartbreaking.
The bettors are collateral damage in this case, but we need to light candles for them too. Ohio State came into the Peach Bowl as underdogs, but nearly pulled off an amazing money line miracle to finish the year strong and get each New Year’s players off to a great start.
However, the pain is most intense for Buckeyes fans. Not only did they watch their school lose an instant classic, but that missed kick will forever be talked about as one of the most iconic moments in college football history.
Really bad win for everyone.
