However, Arenado had a shaky history with his employer. Before joining the Cardinals in a huge trade, he was signed to a huge contract by the Colorado Rockies. The eight-year, $260 million deal assured fans and the third star that the team is set to win. At least that’s the conclusion everyone has come to.

The Cardinals certainly seem to have plans to compete with the pieces they already have. They didn’t pull the trigger on a huge deal to include several young prospects or big league pieces. The transition from Yadier Molina to Contreras is significant, however there is only one change they undergo.

In fairness, the Cardinals haven’t had many great free agents. Their biggest losses except for Quintana were the retirements of Molina and Albert Pujols. It has been the last stop for a few players in recent seasons. John Lester, JA Happ and Andrew Miller were all on the 2021 roster. It would take a somewhat unexpected free agent deal or signing to get a major addition to the roster. It’s been a rumored destination for several great free customer stops, but they haven’t made a deal with someone.
St. Louis may end up making the same mistake with Arenado again. We will not know this year. The next off-season, when the top four starting pitchers qualify for free, we’ll have an answer.
Even before Arenado joined the organization, this team was constantly competing. The stages of their reconstruction are short. Their odds of winning National League Central are always high. Almost everyone believes that the Cardinals make it to the 2023 postseason in some way. Another early exit could affect the narrative more.
St. Louis is 0-3 in the postseason since Arenado’s arrival. He chose with the expectation of going a little further in the postseason. Did he get his wish or was the front desk caught snoozing this winter?
