Mississippi State vs Tennessee State, predictions and odds for Tuesday, January 3rd

The Tennessee Volunteers are the #8 team in the country and it looks like they could be a top contender in the SEC. The Vols beat Mississippi’s other team, Ole Miss, to go 1-0 in conference play and 12-2 overall.

Mississippi State will be a different kind of test to Tennessee because they will try to challenge them at their own game. The Bulldogs are 11-3 and lost to Alabama.

Two of the best defensive teams in the country go head to head in tonight’s SEC game. Here are the odds and an amazingly low total.

Mississippi vs Tennessee odds, spread and total

Mississippi vs Tennessee prediction and selection

Mississippi has as tough a start to the SEC schedule as possible. Back-to-back games with No. 7 Bama and No. 8 Tennessee aren’t fun. Especially when you consider how different these two top ten teams are. Bama wants to run and play attacking style that is fast and free, while Tennessee is the number one team in defensive proficiency. The Vols are the No. 3 defense in points allowed, giving up just 53.2 points per game. They also have opponents of 33.2% from the field and 21.2% from three, both of which are the best in the country.

The Bulldog isn’t far away though. They are No. 4 in defensive efficiency, No. 4 in points allowed, and 7th in opponent field goal percentage. Teams get close to about 30% with three against them, if you can call that a weakness. These teams don’t score, and they don’t care, their goal is to chain you from one extreme to the other.

The total is pretty low and I still like the bottom player, Tennessee plays slow, but Mississippi State plays slower, so don’t expect a lot of scoring.
