The Chicago Bears are heading toward a top two draft pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and their latest quarterback move is another second from that idea.
Heading into a Week 18 battle against the Minnesota Vikings, the Chicago Bears are on the brink of either a No. 1 or No. 2 overall pick. Given their current belief in Justin Fields, it looks like the franchise will avoid a signal caller pick in April.
However, they still have to lose the game against Minnesota to make those dreams come true, and with their latest move, it looks like this is the direction they want to go. Adam Shifter reported that Chicago would not start Justin Fields at the end of the season and instead select backup Nathan Peterman.
So there is that. Peterman will get the shots on Sunday without much to gain and a lot to lose. If Chicago wins the game, it drops to fourth overall in the draft, and the value of that pick isn’t as high as if the team lost.
If Chicago is going to lose on Sunday, which they probably will, no questions asked. They will believe nothing worse than the second overall choice, and the options there are bewildering.

Here is where it gets interesting. If the Chicago Bears lose and the Houston Texans can pick up a win over the Indianapolis Colts, that means the Bears will clinch the #1 overall pick in the game. 2023 NFL Draft. This will be pure madness, and a lot of excitement will follow.
Given their willingness to commit to Justin Fields, the capital project that the team would be willing to pay the Bears if they were in such a situation would help provide potential building blocks for the team and develop their QB. Furthermore, by picking either first or second, the picks bonus that could come in any trade can make up for the lost second-round pick the team used in the Chase Claypool trade.
In short, the bears have to lose one last time on Sunday, and the clock can officially start ticking. There will be a lot of space, there will be a capital project, and excuses will end. Lose now, win big later.
