Hubert Davis quote after OT win vs. Baylor

The UNC Tar Heels overcame the 25-point lead, but ultimately defeated the Baylor Bears in overtime. Here’s what coach Hubert Davies had to say after the big win.

To say the UNC Tar Heels have competed in a rollercoaster is not an exaggeration. The Tar Heels took a 25-point lead against the #1 Baylor Bears, the national title holder, and forced overtime. However, the Tar Heels made the most of their shots, defeating the Bears 93-86 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

After the game, head coach Hubert Davis spoke with CBS Sports and talked about the aforementioned surprise advance but shut things down in overtime to advance into the NCAA Championship.

The Tar Heels looked like they were going to shut things down in the second half, but that wasn’t the case.

Brady Mannick, who scored 26 on his tally with an 8-for-13 shot from the field and a 4-for-8 shot from behind the 3-point line, was kicked out of the game with a flagrant 2 foul. Since then, the momentum has shifted in Baylor’s favor. In the end, the match was forced into overtime as both teams tied at 30 points each.

Perhaps the hero of the game was sophomore guard RJ Davis, who went up in overtime. With an 88-85 heel tar, Armando Bacot got the rebound after a three-point shot missed by Baylor James Akingo. Davis drove to the basket, hit the ball goal and received the foul, which resulted in a three-point play after his shot from the charity bar. That gave North Carolina a comfortable 91-85 lead.

With this victory, Tar Heels qualify for the Sweet Sixteen for the fifth time in their past six entries. They await the winner of Saturday’s game between No. 4 in the UCLA Bruins and No. 5 Saint Mary’s Gaels.
