Curtis Blades rocks Chris Dawkos with a stunning knockout at UFC Columbus.
Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight Curtis Blades is known to be an elite wrestler, but it was the massively improved boxing that proved the difference against Chris Dawkos at UFC Columbus.
Blaydes and Daukaus had Round 1 back and forth, with both fighters finding their timing on their feet. Blaydes, to the surprise of many, wasn’t even trying to make a single takedown in the opening minutes.
Having outflanked Daukaus in the first round with a heavy blow, Blaydes continued to press in the second round. He landed with a big right hand that landed on Daukaus’ chin, causing Daukaus to fall onto the carpet before landing some ground and the evil pound for the finish.
It was the Blaydes’ first TKO finish since his victory over former UFC champ Junior dos Santos in 2020.
Curtis Blades called for a temporary title shot after winning
The Blaydes came to UFC Columbus after winning five of his last six, with his only knockout defeat to Derek Lewis in February 2021. He rebounded in big fashion in his last fight with a unanimous victory over Jairzinho Rosenstrek at UFC 266.
Blaydes has been a mainstay in the UFC heavyweight title picture since he bagged wins over top contenders such as Alistair Overeem, Mark Hunt and Dos Santos earlier in his career.
Daukaus was fighting in his second straight UFC main event after falling to Lewis last December. Prior to that, he won his first of four UFC matches over the likes of Alexei Oleinik and Shamil Abdul Rahimov.
The victory over Daukaus puts the Blaydes in the midst of the heavyweight title debate. Frances Ngannou will miss nine months after undergoing knee surgery, which could open the door to an interim title match later this year.
