Dejounte Murray has been traded for the Hawks to pair up with Trae Young but Tottenham are getting a huge amount of compensation in return.
Perhaps not more so in the post-season, it was clear that the Atlanta Hawks needed to do something off-season to get to another level with the roster around star guard Trae Young.
On the Wednesday before the start of the league’s new year, the franchise was able to achieve just that with a massive trading deal.
The Hawks exchanged another San Antonio Spurs star guard to pair with Young, DeJewunt Murray.
Dejounte Murray deal details: Hawks get star guard, Spurs get a bunch of picks
As you would certainly expect, the Hawks don’t get Murray with any kind of discount. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Atlanta will send Danilo Galinari and three first-round picks, as well as a potential 2026 pick swap, to Spurs in the deal.
Murray has emerged as a real star for Tottenham in recent years. In 68 games last year, the Washington producer averaged 21.1 points, 9.2 assists, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. His two-way ability as well as his versatility in the gaming industry should make things dangerous in Atlanta in the best possible way.
What remains is whether the Hawks have any other big moves coming down the pipeline this off season. There have been persistent rumors about the club’s dealings with big man John Collins en route to the 2022-23 campaign and free agency is still looming. After a deal like this, though, you have to think that this is just the first of several steps.
