The New York Yankees are among the likely candidates for Washington Nationals star Juan Soto, who turned down a $440 million contract this week.
Any Soto trade deal will require a potential re-withdrawal in return. Mike Rizzo has previously stated that he has no interest in dealing with the 23-year-old defensive player – but things are changing. Namely, Soto turned down a contract that would have made him the richest man in baseball history.
This isn’t a small change, and given the citizens’ current ownership issues, it could be as high as the Rizzo feels it can go.
So where is Washington heading from here? They are currently getting a call on Soto, but it will take a long time for them to trade it before the August 2 deadline.
If the Yankees are to persuade the Nats to deal north of the Mason-Dixon line, the trade should include some of those expectations.
Juan Soto Rumors: The Yankees could trade with Anthony Volpi
Volpe is the highest prospect in the New York system, and it’s a major reason why none of the high-priced free agent stops in the free agency were chased in the last off-season. Currently playing for Double-A Somerset, Volpi has turned his season around and has the possibility of an MLB debut in 2023, if all goes well.
MLB . pipeline Volpi hits about 25-30 home runs per year at the MLB level, which is above average for his position. He also plans to stay at Shortstop:
“Volpe also comes with outstanding make-up and quality instincts that help his gear play on the bases and on the field. His strong pace and aggressive nature translated to 33 steals in 42 attempts last season. His arm earns mild to hard scores but he makes up for with a good internal clock and quick firing. He has fast hands and feet. To play at least average short stops.”
There’s a reason Volpi is one of the best potential players in baseball. As a former first-rounder, he can follow in the footsteps of Derek Jeter, a local producer (Morristown, NJ) to boot.
