USWNT goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris says the recent equal pay deal with US Soccer represents a success for future national team players as well as women in all professions.
In May, the US women’s national team made history. It has nothing to do with kicking the ball. Instead, it marked the end of a six-year legal battle with the US Soccer Federation over equal pay with the men’s team.
The landmark deal, which also includes World Cup trophies, was voted on by both the men’s and women’s players.
“We’ve always been striving for more equality, and I’m happy at this moment,” US goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris told FanSided’s Mark Karman. “Obviously this is a huge success for women, sports and football, but there is always more work to be done.”
The USWNT, winner of the last two World Cups, remains one of the strongest teams on the planet. The team will look for three clots next summer in the World Cup in Australia / New Zealand.
The United States recently qualified for the World Cup, as well as the 2024 Paris Olympics, after winning the CONCACAF W Championship on Monday with a 1-0 victory over rival Canada.
The 36-year-old Harris, who plays for NJ/NY Gotham FC and is married to fellow USWNT defender Ali Krieger, said the new CBA deal is a way to push it forward as it will benefit USWNT players in the future.
“To come out on top and finally get the respect so many of these women deserve is a huge success for female footballers and women across all industries who continue to fight for equal pay and what it deserves,” she said. “I’m really happy with this next generation.”

Harris has been part of the national team since 2013. She went to North Carolina, winning three NCAA Division I titles. A two-time Goalkeeper of the Year (2011 at WPS and 2016 at NWSL), the Florida native was part of the 2015 and 19 World Cup winning US teams.
“At the end of the day, representing your country is a gift,” she said. “Sports won’t always be fun because there are so many ups and downs, failures and successes.”
Back in March, former US goalkeeper Hope Solo, in a podcast interview with USWNT star Carli Lloyd, Criticize How players like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan dealt with previous CBA agreements.
In response, Harris reiterated that she was “very happy with these little kids,” referring to future American players.
“This seems a bit bitter from the previous players. … It sounds like a disgruntled former player,” she added.
