Russell Wilson’s contract extension is a disgrace for Browns

The Cleveland Browns secured Deshaun Watson’s contract, a decision that looks worse and worse with each new quarterback contract signed around the NFL.

The Denver Bronx signed Russell Wilson to a five-year extension of $165 million in guaranteed money. The total deal value is $245 million.

Wilson now has the third most secured money in the NFL. Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, the most assured player at $230 million, is almost certain to get nearly the full value of the Wilson deal.

When you consider the context around Watson’s situation – starting with the fact that he won’t play until Week 12 this season due to the suspension – it makes Brown appear completely incompetent and morally bankrupt to secure such a deal.

Let’s start with the pure cost of acquiring Watson.

Brown surrendered five draft to four in the first two draft rounds. The Browns will not have first-round picks for the next two seasons. In one fell swoop, Brown decided to give Watson a fully guaranteed five-year contract and the aforementioned $230 million.

In addition to the dollars and cents, there are costs to the team socially and schematically.

For one thing, Brown knew that Watson’s comment was likely to follow more than 20 accusations of sexual misconduct. After they traded on his behalf and extended his contract, two new allegations surfaced.

Watson was initially suspended for 6 games, then an NFL appeal extended the suspension to 11 games.

The comment hardly hurt Watson financially:

Brown owes a lot of money to the player, first, he hasn’t played since January 2021 and second, he won’t play until the end of 2022. They signed this extension with Watson when no other team was willing to pull on Watson’s fetch due to a series of complications and problems that come with doing so. Cleveland gave up all his influence, and why?

Furthermore, they acted morally reprehensible to win at any cost, trading for Watson in the face of sexual misconduct details.

Clearly Cleveland prioritized winning. But even if you stack Watson’s other decades with quarterbacks across the league solely on that basis alone, the Browns look disgraceful and foolish.

They guarantee more money than Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes and now Russell Wilson. Based on the money, you are more confident in Deshaun Watson Who are these three men?

Layer on other issues regarding the off-field situation with Watson, and the contract Cleveland handed over to Watson is impossible to justify. Brown continues to embarrass themselves.

Enjoy it, Cleveland. This will get worse over time.
