Within a couple of days, the plots and discussions about UFC 279 appeared to have multiplied tenfold. And it wasn’t until Balance Day that things got even crazier, resulting in a major reshuffle of the card unlike anything seen since UFC 223 in 2018.
Now, the main event of UFC 279 will be a fight between fan favorites Nate Diaz and Tony Ferguson.
Diaz will compete in the final fight for his current UFC deal — and the expectation is that this will be the last time Diaz will compete in the octagon.
Diaz last competed at UFC 263 in June 2021, dropping his unanimous decision to current welterweight champion Leon Edwards. It was his first fight since losing his BMF title with Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244.
In his first welterweight appearance here, Ferguson entered this fight in a four-game losing streak, most recently being lost by Michael Chandler at UFC 274. This slip, which began with his loss in a provisional lightweight title fight with Justin Gethje, It was followed by 12 straight fights for “El Cucuy” which saw him at one point claim temporary lightweight gold.
Buzzes Shemayev, who was scheduled to fight Diaz in the main event before losing his big weight, will now face Kevin Holland – who has big beef – in a joint five-round main event.
Daniel Rodriguez, who was due to fight Holland, will now face Ferguson’s original opponent – Li Jingliang.
