The Chicago Cubs were doomed in the 2022 season due to their moves (or lack thereof) in their last off-season.

In 2021, the Chicago Cubs weren’t a good baseball team in any sense of the word. After the playoffs took place in 2020, the 2021 Cubs went 71-91 and traded most of their key players.

However, a team like Cubs could easily have reconstructed much of its core in the commercial and/or free agent marketplace. They’ve made some moves that indicate they want to win and win now, by hiring free-shooting agent Marcus Strowman and Japanese defense player Seiya Suzuki in the free-agent market.

With these additions and, to a large extent, maintaining the same team they did last year, the Cubs finished with a slightly better 74-88 record. That was 13 games back from the Phillies for the third and final NL Wild Card.

Here are the five biggest mistakes the Cubs made in 2022.

5) Not addressing their bases enough

For a team that was 14 games under 0.500, their schedule wasn’t horrible… but it wasn’t good. Their Bullpen ERA was 4.12, which was 21 in baseball.

Of the 12 teams in the playoffs in 2022, only one of them (Peles, who had not been in the post-season for over a decade due to a persistently bad pulp) had an ERA among the top 14 teams . Words, of the 14 best Bullpen ERA teams, 11 made it to the playoffs.

In the second half of the season (the Post-All-Star Game), though, the Cubs had a 3.85 ERA, which was 17th. Cubs actually went 39-31 after the All-Star Game, which was actually the fifth best record in the NL.
