The massive trade that sent former Dallas Cowboys star Amary Cooper to the Cleveland Browns appears to have backfired more for Cleveland than Dallas.
Amary Cooper came to his place as a Dallas Cowboy, which is why the Cowboys sought to retain him. In 2020, Cooper signed a five-year, $100 million extension, but by 2022, Cooper and the Cowboys no longer made financial sense.
He traded the Cowboys Cooper and his costly contract with the Cleveland Browns for two fifth-round picks and swapped sixth-round picks for the 2022 NFL Draft. The shots resulted in offensive lineman Matt Waltzko and linebacker Devin Harper for Dallas, with Cleveland taking wide receiver Mike Woods.

In 2022, Cooper was awarded fix It’s still worth the money: He averaged 24.67 yards per catch with three receptions for 74 yards in a tight 23-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7. Cooper also had back-to-back games with exactly 101 yards, a notable achievement for any NFL wide receiver.
While Cooper continues to be an exceptional player, the trade hasn’t played out for Brown as well as they had hoped, at least not yet. With the team now sitting at 2-5 after four consecutive losses, the trade is currently trending in favor of the Cowboys: The NFC East has an inverted record at 5-2.
Both franchises played without quarterbacks, with Dak Prescott just returning in Week 7 to defeat the Lions while Deshaun Watson remained suspended until Week 12. During that time, the Cowboys managed to make it work without Cooper, using Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard on the backcourt with CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup passes.
But even with Cooper, Brown couldn’t pull off enough wins in the winning column, making this trade an even bigger win for the Cowboys right now.

A major factor in the trade that has yet to play a role is the fact that Cooper has yet to play with Deshaun Watson. At 2-5, Browns will be hard-pressed to change their season, as the team is unlikely to win every other game and go 12-5 at this point.
But the Watson-Cooper connection could pay off for the Browns’ next season, making this trade even more even in the long run.
However, as it stands, the Cowboys are able to handle Cooper’s loss. Lamb has been a deep, stellar threat from the start, joining a long line of iconic cowboys early in his career. The Gallup was great too, and with their split with the running committee, the Cowboys were much more able to move the chains without a Cooper.
Brown’s attack grabbed a lot of attention in the first few weeks of the season, but the team dropped the ball in recent weeks. Cooper, Donovan Peoples-Jones and David Njoku all played great games in Week 7, with Peoples-Jones and Njoku catching all of their targets for exactly 71 yards each. But the confusion that turned into the landing of the crows made the difference in the end cost brown the game.
In the long run, the Amari Cooper business could be a good business for both sides. Cooper isn’t the bust many thought was back in Oakland, but he needs the right environment for his abilities to make a huge impact on the game. Maybe next year, Cleveland.
