Houston Astros player Aledmys Diaz tried to bow to a shot on the field, but referee James Howe called him to the home plate.
At the bottom of the 10th inning, the Astros needed two key players hoping for one last comeback. However, Aledmys Diaz went against the tide in his attempt.
With David Robertson on the bump, Diaz leaned in to break a floor upwards inward, hoping to convince the referee he had hit the ball. While Diaz Contact started with the ball, he said. This, of course, was not allowed, and he was called back to the home plate to finish his bat.
Still facing a 3-0 loss, Robertson had Diaz swing his shoe on the next court and then started playing in the final.
Why was Aledmys Diaz HBP not awarded?
According to the MLB rulebook, a hitter must make an attempt to get out of the way of said court. Aledmys Diaz didn’t.
“Hit-by-hit doesn’t count as a hit, but it does count as time on base for percentage purposes on base. Some hitters—specifically those who stand near the board—have a knack for earning HBPs, which can obviously come in handy as any hitter’s goal is hitting base. But hits can lead to hit after hit because most pitches shoot at 80mph or faster. According to the rules, a hitter must try to avoid getting hit in order to get first base.”
Diaz, if present, tried to bend to said pitch rather than turn away from it.

Aledmys Diaz had to earn his place on the base the hard way, and he failed to do so. Hitting under 0.100 in the post-season, Diaz didn’t feel confident in his ability to lead the tie-and-win races home, which was already in place at that moment. Leaning into the Robertson class, he was simply moving the lineup to the next hitter.
Fortunately, for the sake of my sanity, referee James Howe grabbed this cunning and pathetic technique to get to the base.
Diaz was put in a tough spot, and instead of trying to live up to the moment, he took what I assumed was the easy way out.
Even Astros fans should be upset by Diaz’s behavior at a critical moment in the first game. Yes, Diaz has been spoiled this season, but Houston sports fans would certainly prefer to see what he can do with the racquet in his hands. Instead, he purposely leaned against the board in hopes of saving what amounted to a useless basic runner.
