Against the Los Angeles Rams, Christian McCaffrey was the engine that did everything for the 49ers, scoring three different ways in the victory.
When the San Francisco 49ers acquired Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers, they sought a proven good for their backgrounds. They got something better, a man who can actually do everything.
Against the Los Angeles Rams, McCaffrey was responsible for three touchdowns, which on the surface don’t shock anyone, but how he got all three is a marvel. McCaffrey ran for a touchdown, picked up a touchdown pass, and threw one in a bluff to Brandon Ayuk.
This makes McCaffrey the first player to score a touchdown pass, fast touchdown, and receiving touchdown in the same game since Hall of Famer Ladanian Tomlinson did so in 2005.
Christian McCaffrey redefined diversity for the 49ers in their victory over defending champion Rams
The cost of buying Christian McCaffrey was prohibitive. Three highly recruit picks in 2023 and a fifth in 2024, and many believe the Panthers got better because of the amount of capital earned. In the future, it may be the right choice. At the same time, the 49ers felt they were given a valuable commodity in return.
At 26, McCaffrey hasn’t quite hit his head yet, and the 49ers’ system is adequate to take advantage of running backwards over a long period and giving a fair amount of rest to every player who runs the ball. Linebacker Bobby Turner and head coach Kyle Shanahan believe there are multiple ball carriers who can make one cut and go to keep the running back room fresh.
Christian McCaffrey did his job, and 49 players avenged their NFC Championship game loss. Being a winning master is a bonus, and joining the date in the process certainly doesn’t hurt either.
