Tyreek Hill proves he doesn’t need Patrick Mahomes

When Tyreek Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins, many questioned whether he could thrive without Patrick Mahomes. It wasn’t a problem.

A thriving Tyreek Hill, he leads the NFL in reception with his new Miami Dolphins look.

Hey, who needs Patrick Mahomes, anyway?

While most recipients would see their numbers severely damaged following the loss of Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs’ dynamic attack plans, Hill proved different.

On Sunday against the Detroit Lions, Hill had 12 high-game passes for 188 yards in a 31-27 Dolphins victory. Hill collected the best 961 yards in the league, setting him to run at a pace of 2042. This would break the one-season record of 1964—albeit achieved in 16 games—set by Calvin Johnson’s 2012 campaign.

Playing with the trio of Tua Tagovailoa, Teddy Bridgewater, and Skylar Thompson, Hill averages 10.4 yards per goal. In 2021, only three receivers (Debo Samuel, Jamar Chase and Tyler Lockett) had a better number while totaling at least 100 goals. It will be Hill’s best personal performance since 2018, his first year with Mahomes.

While Hill has enjoyed six extraordinary seasons with Kansas City—resulting in six Pro Bowls, three first All-Pro teams and a Super Bowl ring—this may be his best statistical effort to date.

During those six campaigns in Kansas City, Hill’s 8-game best run saw 837 yards in total, coming in weeks 8-16 of the 2020 season. Hill surpassed that number by more than 100 yards on his Miami debut.

Then there are the monster games we saw from the hill in teal.

Across 91 games with the Chiefs, Hill had six regular season efforts from 160 yards. In just eight matches with Dolphins, he’s made four.

Hill’s new opportunity may have brought out the best in the outstanding NFL armament, motivating him. All while getting another great scheme in first-year coach Mike McDaniel and a quick threat he faces at Jaylen Waddle.

Regardless of his reasons for his continued success, Hill has shown that he is an elite player no matter who picks up the ball from him. While we saw Davante Adams struggle relatively with the Las Vegas Raiders and Derek Carr regarding his fun days with Aaron Rodgers, there was no takedown for Hill.

If Miami manages to run a playoff, it’s almost certainly due in large part to Hill’s ability to create mismatches and exploit them later.

For years, Mahomes and Hill were the best combination in football.

Turns out Hill would have been fine without the best footballer of all time.
