CFP chief reveals Ohio State is ranked ahead of Michigan

Boo Corrigan, chair of the College Football Play Selection Committee, revealed the exact reason why Ohio State ranked Michigan.

The top four in the College Football Playoff rankings again remain with the undefeated teams. On Tuesday night, there were no changes in the top four, with Georgia taking the top spot, followed by Ohio State, Michigan, and California State University in that exact order.

With Ohio State and Michigan having identical 10-0 records, some Wolverines fans may be wondering why they are not ranked ahead of the Buckeyes.

During a press conference with reporters, CFP Selection Committee Chairman Boo Corrigan cited Ohio State’s season-opening victory over Notre Dame, which was ranked as the fifth-best team in the country at the time.

CFP Chairman Boo Corrigan reveals why Ohio State was ranked ahead of Michigan

“Two well-balanced teams, both in the top 10 offensively and defensively,” Corrigan said. h/t 247 sport. Ohio State beat Notre Dame, which I think at this point as a committee, as we talk about it, stands out a little bit for us as we go through this.

“But again, two really good teams that are playing strong. They both had good wins last week over Indiana and Nebraska. One reason is No. 2 and the other is No. 3 in how close they are.”

Ohio State defeated Notre Dame 21-10 in its first game of the season, and overcame a 10-7 halftime deficit after a touchdown pass from quarterback CJ Stroud to wide receiver Xavier Johnson in the third quarter and a two-yard touchdown run by Myan Williams in the fourth.

Notre Dame was one of three non-conference opponents Ohio State scheduled for this season, and they were seeded. As for Michigan, they faced three non-conference teams, but they were up against Colorado State, Hawaii, and UConn, all of whom were unranked. The Wolverines outscored their opponents 166-17.

In the end, what matters is who stands tall when these two teams meet at the end of the regular season. The winner will not only get bragging rights, but also a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game representing the Eastern Division. This will be the final decision as to who should truly be ranked higher than the other in the CFP rankings.

Michigan will face Illinois in Week 12, while Ohio State will face Maryland.
