Australia defeated Denmark in a World Cup upset of epic proportions, and the Australian team qualified for the knockout round.
Australia Second place In their group only to France with six points and a goal difference of -1. A match against Denmark, ranked 10th in the world by FIFA and considered by many to be a dark horse team in this tournament, stood in the way of a round-of-16 invitation.
But the Australian team pulled off a historic upset by defeating Denmark 1-0 and held their ground despite late traffic in front of the Danish side.
Matthew Leakey scored the only goal of the match, which brought Australia to its feet in the early morning hours. The match finished around 4 am local time in Sydney.
The last time Australia reached the knockout round of a World Cup
The Australian national team has made it to the last five World Cups, but has not been knocked out in the group stage since 2006, when it lost to eventual champions Italy. For Australia, surviving a tough group and entering the last 16 is testament to the development of sport in a country that often depends on other activities. Similar to the United States, Australia has been hungry for success in international soccer for some time, and is by no means content with simply appearing in the knockout round.
World Cup Group D standings
The fourth group did not turn out as everyone expected. Denmark and France were seeded as clear favorites to move on to the knockout stages ahead of the tournament, with Australia and Tunisia upset. Instead, the bottom two teams turned European powers upside down thanks to shock victories.

- France – 6 points, goal difference +3
- Australia – 6 points, goal difference -1
- Tunisia – 3 points, 0 goal difference
- Denmark – 3 points, goal difference – 2
It is clear that the Danish national team is the biggest disappointment in the 2022 World Cup so far.
