Dansby Swanson’s first Braves offer revealed

The Braves want to keep Dansby Swanson. Their first attempt to do so was revealed with the opening of the MLB Winter Meetings in San Diego.

Dansby Swanson is a guy from Georgia who played seven years of his career with the hometown Atlanta Braves, so it’s hard truly He thinks he’d consider moving on, even if he has family connections to Chicago through his fiancée, Mallory Pugh.

The Braves appear to be a front runner to re-sign the 2022 Gold Glover, but they aren’t closing out outside options. He meets at least the Philadelphia Phillies.

That’s not to say the Phillies are real contenders for landing Swanson, and it would be foolish at the very least not to hear about outside offers. But it is worth noting.

The Braves initial offer for Swanson has been officially reported.

The Braves’ inaugural contract revealed superstar free agent Dansby Swanson

Bob Nightingale reports that the Atlanta Braves have offered Swanson $100 million, but he’s seeking 40 percent more than that.

Swanson is the backup plan for many teams vying for Turner, Bogarts and Corea, and the Atlanta Braves still have him as their top priority. They offered about $100 million to keep Swanson, but he’s seeking at least $140 million, and neither party has budge. If Swanson doesn’t return, executives speculate he could end up with the St. Louis Cardinals.”

Nightengale did not provide details about the length of the contract offer which is critical to determining whether this deal will be good or bad for Atlanta and whether or not it is a competitive offer. Other teams may be willing to offer him more but on a longer basis.

The Braves have made incredibly smart financial decisions with homegrown stars, but Swanson could be one of the first to spend the big bucks. Austin Riley is their biggest signing, in a 10-year, $212 million deal that keeps him under Atlanta until 2033. Riley has a 4.3 162-game average WAR, and Swanson has a 2.8. A contract going with Reilly Warfare Diminishing Accounting would equate to about $138 million over 6-7 years with AAV at about $14 million.

So, the $140 million that Swanson is after seems fair.

It is important to remember that the introductory offer does not mean that it is the final offer. far from it. The Braves open the market for Swanson and he will explore other options. Being a hometown kid, it’s reasonable to expect he’ll likely give the Braves an option to match their best bid.

But will he have to get a discount in his hometown? And most importantly, will he be willing?
