Michigan fans didn’t take it well to trailing 14-0 against TCU in the CFP Semifinal game at the Fiesta Bowl, and gave up before the end of the first quarter.
Momentum swings are the best and worst thing for fans in sports. Highs and lows can switch places at any moment.
For Michigan fans, the euphoria of a 54-yard touchdown run from Donovan Edwards on the first play of the game quickly faded to despair. The Horned Frogs got a fourth down at the goal line, returned an interception for a touchdown and hit another to take a 14-0 lead going into the first quarter.
While ESPN’s camera operators teased Wolverine fans in the stands, those at home on message boards and Twitter were melting in their own way.
Michigan fans immediately abandon CFP after falling behind TCU
Going down twice in the CFP semi-finals sure doesn’t feel great. However, writing off the game at that point would probably count as jumping the gun.
At the same time, the deficit means the Wolverines will have to do something they haven’t had to do all season: come back from a 14-point deficit.
Jim Harbaugh’s record on that front is discouraging. According to ESPN Stats & Info, the Wolverines are 3-15 under the coach when falling behind by two or more touchdowns.
Michigan has three quarters to break the trend or the fan reaction will move further.
