The last time Michigan won a national championship was in 1997.

Michigan went undefeated in the regular season, beating several ranked teams such as Colorado, Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa, Michigan State, and Ohio State. The Wolverines completed their undefeated regular season by defeating the Buckeyes 20-14.

As the No. 1 ranked team in the nation in their final two regular season games, the Wolverines were drafted to the Rose Bowl, where they faced the No. 8 Washington State Cougars. The Wolverines responded with 14 unanswered points, touching down on two passes from quarterback Brian Griese.
